Geek get-together
Starting at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, tech companies from in and around San Diego will gather at Qualcomm headquarters, 5775 Morehouse Drive, for GadgetFest 2008, a mini trade show where they’ll be exhibiting the latest gadgets and hold a competition that will name the “Greatest Gadget” of the year. The event is free for college students, $45 for anyone who registers before noon on Oct. 22, $50 at the door. Also, at 6 p.m. Thursday Oct. 23, San Diego tech geeks are invited to Mission Bay Park for a San Diego Geek Bonfire. Bring a jacket and come ready to chat about Web 2.0, the tech industry, IT, Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, science fiction, comics and whatever else your geek heart desires. How do you draw the line between erotic art and pornography? What’s tasteful and what’s tacky when it comes to nude photography? It’s a dance-off
Stealing the concept from American Idol, judge Randy Jackson—the one who isn’t as mean as Simon Cowell but is nowhere near as uselessly nice as Paula Abdul—produced his own reality competition show, America’s Best Dance Crew. If you missed it, you missed out. The show was good, so good that Jackson decided to take it on a live tour and recently extended that tour to include a stop at San Diego Sports Arena, 3500 Sports Arena Blvd., at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23. What can you expect? Some of the top break-dance crews in the nation will go head-to-head while a panel of B-list celebrities judge their skills. $49.50. www.sandiegoarena.com.

Dead day
Yeah, we know Halloween is a week away, but the holiday celebrating death, candy and dressing in slutty and/or grotesque costumes is one of our favorites, so we like to stretch things out as long as possible. Not to be missed this year is the Zombie Walk Food Drive. Dress in your best zombie garb and, at 5:45 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, head to the corner of Fifth Avenue and L Street. Mob through the streets of the Gaslamp with other undead souls, and then end things at The Stage Saloon, 762 Fifth Ave., where nonperishable food and household items will be collected. Tommy George, the guy who always laughed the loudest at Ocean Beach Comedy shows, passed away this summer due to complications from asthma. To pay respect to one of their biggest fans, Kyle Smith, winner of Jimmy Kimmel’s College Comedy Competition, and other comedians will perform at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at Winston’s, 1921 Bacon St. in Ocean Beach. Development
A few years ago, we wrote about Sheldon Brown, director of the Center for Research in Computing and the Arts (CRCA) at UCSD, and the algorithm he wrote that replicates urban design. Brown has shown his work around the world but has yet to give San Diegans the chance to experience his creation, “Scalable City.” From 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, the public will finally be able to check out Brown’s interactive computerized world at the grand opening of the gallery at Calit2 in Atkinson Hall on UCSD campus.gallery.calit2.net.
Got the goods: From 10 a.m. to noon Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 25 and 26, the Spanish Village Art Center will open its doors for the Fall Festival of Art, a celebration with live music, art demonstrations and a silent art auction featuring more than 250 artisans, artists and craftspeople. The Fall Festival comes just in time for the holiday shopping season, so bring your list and be ready to check at least Mom off of it. Makeover
Beauty Bar went through a managerial change awhile ago, but lately the City Heights nightclub seems to be hitting its stride. The hipster haunt will host REamp Thursdays, a new weekly industry night for local bands, DJs, promoters and music geeks. Kicking things off at 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, are the bands War Stories, The Drowning Men and The Black Mercies. Then, at 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, the lovely ladies behind what was once upon a time known as San Diego House Parties will take over Beauty Bar for Front and Ivy, a night featuring live performances by The Death Set, Apes of Wrath, The Lanterns and DJ Andrew Decade.
