Honey’s Bistro & Bakery and its misleading name
Encinitas is about a half-hour north of downtown San Diego—and as casual destinations go, you could do worse. The city features its share of neat hiking trails, sports a spankin’-new county library and, thanks largely to two San Diego theater groups, seems well on its way to acquiring a nifty performing-arts space. It totally needs it, too—a local choral group, which regularly sells out in the area, can’t even play its home city for lack of venues to plant the butts.
While you’re waiting for that fateful day, you might want to wander into Honey’s Bistro & Bakery, the place with the terrific food and the slightly misleading name. It’s a bakery, all right, with to-die-for cheese Danishes and a chocolate-dipped doughnut that will curl your hair (assuming, of course, that your hair is naturally straight). But the breakfasts—featuring the best $6.50 huevos rancheros on Earth and the not-far-behind scrambled egg dish with cheese and Italian sausage (same price)—rule the morning. This place also understands wraps, which are coming into their own as both a delicacy and a light main course. There are six of them to choose from, all at $5.95; one even features Thai chicken, a step or two removed from traditional fare.
Don’t worry about overdoing it here—you can burn off your meal on those hiking trails, most of which are within easy reach of the address (632 South Coast Hwy. 101). The phone number is 760-942-5433, and a human being will likely pick up between 5:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. seven days. The straight-haired among you would do well to consider that chocolate-dipped doughnut—the perm comes at no extra charge.
